Actually, the better question is “what do hiring managers want from you?”
First here is what they don’t want – they don’t want gimmicks. They don’t want colored paper, pictures, or promises about cooking meals, babysitting kids. They don’t want custom poetry, videos, rap songs or tickets to concerts. Hiring managers are swamped with resumes. They want you to make their jobs easy. That’s it.
So in today’s fiercely competitive job market, here is what hiring managers want to know when deciding who to hire:
• What are you good at (what do you do really well)?
• How you have used what you are good at in other jobs (to see your performance in action)?
• What measurable value have provided for others (to see what kind of value you will provide for the company)?
Hiring managers need you to present the right things on your resume. They want just the important things so they can quickly and accurately determine your fit, performance and value.
Most resumes are trash, and that is where they end up. They tell the wrong things, offer too much detail and confuse the hiring manager. So, make it clear, simple and meaningful. Make the hiring manager’s job easy and make yourself the natural choice. Show that you are the right fit for the job and will add great value. See my new Talent-based Resume that shows how to present yourself in the best way. Stand out for the right reason.
